The Pilbara Iron Ore Fortescue Metals Group Limited (FMGL) conducts iron-ore extraction and shipping operations in the Pilbara region of WA. Ore is transported on the FMGL operated rail line between Port Hedland and Cloud Break mine.

As part of the expansion, FMGL has proposed to increase iron ore production by constructing a new mine at Christmas Creek which is approximately 46km from Cloud Break mine. To support this expansion, the existing communications network (including a digital microwave backbone with supporting 2 Mbps and IP interfaces) is required to be extended. The extension also comprises ancillary services including a point to point land mobile radio (LMR), point to multi point wayside telemetry and specific interface equipments to service sidings, trackside detectors for heavy haul railroads and port operations.

This implementation of the extended network will require time efficient methods for the design, installation and commissioning of the new communications systems. In particular, the integration of the new to the existing network has to be performed in a strict cutover procedure in order to minimise impact on current mine operation and rail safety. At the same time, this implementation has to be achieved on time and within budget. For those reasons, Worley Parsons required the expertise and skills from the Titan ICT professional team to provide the Technical Engineering Services which consisted of Bill of Materials, detailed design drawings, factory/site acceptance documents, network reliability and IP reports together with all test plans including transition and handover plans for various communication systems such as microwave and multiplex systems, Network Management, power systems, IP network, Wayside telemetry and Land Mobile Radio.
