Teleprotection signalling is an essential application used by energy transmission and distribution utilities to protect critical infrastructure commonly delivered over PDH technology.
While PDH has been considered adequate at performing this role, it is rapidly approaching and in some cases already reached obsolescence. At the same time many utilities have already deployed MPLS based technologies to support other critical business applications suggesting that it is now an opportune time to evaluate if MPLS technologies meet the stringent requirements of teleprotection, and to define a strategy to gracefully transition away from legacy technologies.
Titan ICT’s White Paper on “MPLS as an Alternative to PDH for Teleprotection” discusses the technical, environmental and business challenges utilities currently using PDH should consider to ensure that the communications network does not unnecessarily place the utility at risk by used, aged or unsupported assets for such a critical function.
